So then what’s the point of gathering clothes for our brothers and sisters in need? Or making a high protein sandwich for a rough sleeper? Or writing a cheque for an Out of the Cold program?
Because doing something about a problem, rather than talking about a problem, is important.
Because doing something erases the space between Us who do not suffer from poverty, hunger, homelessness, and drug addiction and Them who do.
Because erasing space between people increases empathy.
Because increasing empathy can activate people to doing even more to alleviate this crisis like writing emails to city councilors, MPPs, and MPs demanding that they address the issues confronting our most vulnerable citizens.
Because writing emails to government officials can motivate people to vote.
Because motivating people to vote may inspire people to help out on electoral campaigns where they can push candidates to include these issues in their platform.
Because being involved in an electoral campaign could lead to running for public office and having the power and influence to ensure concrete action is taken.
Making a protein-rich sandwich may lead someone to seek employment in the social services
Or work in mental health
Or becoming an activist
Or advocating for higher wages for people who want to alleviate this crisis
Or working with developers to create affordable housing
Or becoming an affordable housing develepor
We are not going to donate ourselves out of this crisis, but through a donation, awareness is raised leading to deeper involvement and engagement in solving this problem.
